Simen Hestnæs (born on March 4, 1974, in Oslo, Norway), also known as ICS Vortex, or simply Vortex, was the lead singer of the avant-garde metal band Arcturus and is the bassist and singer for the clean Norwegian symphonic black metal band DIMMU BORGIR. He was recently announced to be the new singer for the Norwegian / English black metal band Code [1], replacing Kvohst who went to the singer of Dødheimsgard. In August 2000, Hestnæs left Borknagar fully concentrate on DIMMU BORGIR. According to an interview, Borknagar was set to tour Europe with Mayhem, about the same time, he would in the studio to communicate with DIMMU BORGIR. Borknagar guitarist and frontman Øystein G. Brun Hestnæs gave an ultimatum: tour with Borknagar, or stop and deal with DIMMU BORGIR. He chose the latter, and stated that he thought DIMMU BORGIR would be a more successful relationship in the long term. Brun would later declare that the decision is "business" and that he "had nothing against DIMMU BORGIR", and he wanted the best Hestnæs; Hestnæs then explained that he had not received the ultimatum, he would still Borknagar to today. Hestnæs first contributed to the registration of the Black Spiritual Dimensions by adding a new vocal element: his own "clean" and "operatic" singing a new element added to DIMMU BORGIR as a band. Hestnæs moving on in the session as bassist with Nagash left the band to concentrate fully on the Kovenant, he is now the permanent replacement on bass and full member of DIMMU BORGIR. In 2005, Hestnæs Arcturus' new singer after the departure of both Garm in 2003, and Spiral Architect's Øyvind Hægeland in 2005. Hægeland left the band due to the distance that he lived on the other band members and Simen took as lead singer of the band, making it the second band in which Simen, the successor of Garm as a singer. In september 2005 the band released their fourth full-length album, and the first full-length without Garm on vocals, SideShow symphonies, which was met with mixed enthusiasm. In 2005 was voted Hestnæs one of the top ten vocalists in Terrorizer Magazine and Arcturus is proclaimed the ten best live acts of 2005. SideShow symphonies was also among the top ten albums of the year in the magazine.
